An Aer Lingus flight was forced to return to Shannon Airport on Sunday afternoon after the aircraft experienced a technical issue soon after take-off.
Flight EI-135, operated by Omni Air International on behalf of Aer Lingus, departed Shannon bound for Boston at 11.47pm.
Soon after departure however the Boeing 767-200 stopped climbing and levelled off at 10,000 feet while the crew tried to troubleshoot the problem.
The flight had been cleared to climb to 28,000ft however the pilot requested permission to stop the climb so they could investigate the problem.
The pilot told controllers they were working on their checklists having detected a technical issue. It’s understood the crew reported an airspeed indication issue.
Soon afterwards, the flight turned around off the Galway coast an routed back to Shannon where it landed safely at 12.30pm.
The aircraft was met by airport fire crews after it landed while engineers were also waiting to investigate the issue.
The flight continued its journey shortly after 3.00pm.
Later, another Aer Lingus flight was forced to return to its departure aircraft after the crew reported an issue.
Flight EI-102 had departed New York’s JFK airport bound from Dublin when the crew reported a maintenance issue.
The pilot requested permission to return to JFK but didn’t declare an emergency and didn’t request assistance from emergency crews.
Later however, after landing, the crew asked that fire crews inspect the aircraft’s undercarriage to ensure the brakes hadn’t overheated during the landing.
Fire services reported the brakes appeared normal but remained with the aircraft as it taxied to its parking position.
A replacement aircraft later took the passengers onto Dublin.
