The decline in and future challenges faced by West Clare’s populations of freshwater pearl mussels will be explored during a free Heritage Week 2016 talk at Kilrush Public Library next Tuesday from 7-9pm.

Margaritifera margaritifera aka the freshwater pearl mussel is a protected species of bivalve mollusc in whatever rivers and lakes it is found, it was recently categorised as critically endangered across Ireland and Europe. The Cloon River is the only Co Clare river designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) for the freshwater pearl mussel.

Next Tuesday’s talk will be hosted by Sheila Downes, Environmental Assessment Officer with Clare County Council, who will speak about the species, its habitat requirements, life cycle and long term prospects within the County. The presentation coincides with a survey of the Cree and Annagheeragh Rivers in West Clare for the presence or absence of freshwater pearl mussels, and a further survey of the Doonbeg River to fill in the gaps of previously unsurveyed stretches of the river.

Sheila highlighted the importance of a greater awareness for the general public. “The freshwater pearl mussel is an important part of our biodiversity and has an important place in our cultural heritage living to over 100 years. Significant populations of freshwater pearl mussels have been found in the Doonbeg River with the catchment being identified by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) as a Margaritifera Sensitive Area with an existing population”.

She concluded “When one considers that 90% of all freshwater pearl mussels died out across Europe during the last century however, it is important that we understand why and also ensure that existing populations remain undisturbed and flourish in their existing environment.”

Further information for this free presentation can be obtained by contacting Congella McGuire, Clare Heritage Officer on cmcguire@clarecoco.ie or 065 6846408 for further information. The talk is one of a record 94 Heritage Weeks events in County Clare from Saturday August 20th to Sunday August 28th. See www.heritageweek.ie for more.
