A tourist is recovering in hospital after she was injured in a fall on a walking trail in north Clare yesterday.

Volunteers from the Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard were requested to locate and recover the woman from the popular Burren Way trail at the Cliffs of Moher. The incident happened about a kilometre south of the main viewing platform.

Personnel used a specialised stretcher to transport the woman across farmland to an ambulance. The location is not accessible by road or land vehicles. Coast Guard members were assisted by Cliffs of Moher rangers.

The woman, understood to be from the United States and visiting Clare with her daughter, was assessed by ambulance paramedics before being removed to hospital.

The woman is believed to have sustained a fractured ankle in the fall.

Earlier in the summer, authorities at the Cliffs of Moher along with the company that manages the popular coastal/cliff trail, renewed warnings to visitors about the dangers of straying from the official path.

That warning followed several incidents in the previous weeks where tourists sustained injuries after falling.

Visitors have been repeatedly warned not to stray from the official cliff trail and to ensure they are properly equipped if venturing onto the open trail.
