U13A Shield Final
Clarecastle GAA:
St Josephs 3-3 Truagh Clonlara 0-2

There were no complaints with the weather in Clarecastle last Saturday as Truagh/Clonlara went head to head with St Joseph’s Doora Barefield to contest the U13 A Shield Final.

First out of the traps were the maroon & white girls with a perfectly posed point from the tall & agile Kate Montwill and when Saidhbh O’Brien sprinted through on a solo run from midfield to connect with full forward Caoilfhionn Ní Chonaill the silotar rattled the back of the net settling the St. Joseph girls into the game. Kate Montwill yet again burst through to pop over her second point of the day but Truagh/Clonlara fought hard to get into the game and despite bring refused entry by a solid half back and full back line and superb goalie Katie Callaghan, centre forward Joanne Egan decided to take the easier option of a point followed with another from corner forward Hannah Tiernan. But there was plenty more fire in the St. Joseph’s girls bellies and when Kate Montwill yet again blasted the silotar towards Truagh/Clonlara goalie Caoimhe Fennessy, it left Ava Lenihan to polish it into the net leaving half time score St. Joseph’s 2-2, Truagh/Clonlara 2 points.

The second half was going to be an uphill battle for Truagh/Clonlara and try as they might there was no penetrating the strong defence line St. Joseph’s produced. St. Joseph’s goalie, Katie Callaghan, blocked ball after ball as the south east Clare side persisted but nothing was registering. Centre back Emma Towey played a captains role giving leadership throughout this game and was instrumental distributing ball into the Joseph’s forward line. Aided securely by midfield duo Saidhbh O’Brien & Shauna Moloney, they effortlessly passed ball into Ellen Doyle in corner forward as she secured her name on the scoresheet when an accurate silotar hit the net. This put St. Joseph’s into a comfortable position as the game drew to the final stages but Shauna Moloney was yet to get her name on the scoresheet as she struck an accurate free to secure this Shield’s home place for the next 12 months. The scoreline in no way reflected the tightness of this sharp encounter and when Áine Nic Cormaic finally called a halt to proceedings the final score read St. Joseph’s Doora Barefield 3-3. U13C Cup Final
Corofin GAA: Crusheen 4-7 Ruan 3-5

In perfect weather conditions Crusheen and Ruan provided a top quality match that was engrossing till the very end. The quality on display from both teams was deserving of a final.

Ruan settled into their rhythm quickly and put early pressure on Crusheen. Their early pressure resulted in them scoring the opening point of the game which was shortly followed by a second to give Ruan an early 0-2 to 0-0 lead. Crusheen found their stride and started to extend pressure on the Ruan defence. A long delivered from Eva Fitzgibbon was flicked on by Ellie Cullinan to Hannah Gleeson who pulled on it first time to the corner of the net. Crusheen forced their advantage home and a brilliant individual goal from Aine Clancy put them firmly in Control.

Crusheen’s half back line and midfield were exerting their influence and another fine run from Aine Clancy caused panic in the Ruan defence, Aoife Rogers being on hand to finish to the net leaving the score Crusheen 3-0 to 0-2. To Ruan’s credit they found another gear. Up till now they could find no way past Grainne Daffy in the Crusheen goal or the full back line of Jodie Fogarty O Neill and Sophie Hull. This was to change as a fine individual goal from Neasa Ni Lachman brought them back into the contest and this was quickly followed by a second goal to cut the gap to the minimum. A fine point from Eva Fitzgibbon edged Cru sheen into a two-point half time lead.

The second half saw Crusheen take the early initiative and they dictated the play. A good clearance from the Crusheen half backs found Aine Clancy in space. Bearing down on goal she had one thing on her mind and finished superbly into the top corner of the net. Mary Hanrahan and Faye Dean were in control in midfield and provided the platform for Crusheen to extend their lead. Some excellent free taking from Faye Dean and Mary Hanrahan saw Crusheen extend their lead to 7 points. Ruan refused to lie down and responded with a goal with five minutes remaining to cut the gap to 4 points. With time running out the Crusheen backs held firm with Maeve Stankard and Sinead O Halloran and Eva Fitzgibbon repealing every attack. At the other end of the field Caoimhe Clancy, Zara Waterhouse, and Grace Gleeson were providing the platform for Crusheen attacks and limiting Ruan’s ability to attack. A final point put 5 between the sides 4-7 to 3-5. The final whistle was greeted with scenes of jubilation as Crusheen claimed their first underage county title.

O’Callaghans Mills GAA:
Broadford 5-3 Cratloe 1-0

Broadford met Cratloe on the morning of Sunday 15th October in the Under 13 C Shield Final. The match took place in O’Callaghan’s Mills after a night of heavy rain so the ground was tough going. However, both teams came on to the field fired up and ready for what was an enjoyable match and an impressive display of camogie skills from all the girls. For the first ten minutes both sides seemed evenly matched but once the girls from Broadford found their stride they dominated the field for most of the match and steadily built up an impressive tally of goals.

Cratloe had a point denied them in the first half due to over-carrying but continued hard throughout the entire match to try and break through the Broadford backline. Fluid midfield play from Cratloes Cliona Murphy and Lucy Earls sent play forward, and in the ensuing scramble in the Broadford square captain Abbey Mason gave them a well-deserved goal. However Broadford’s dominance in the mid-field proved decisive and goals from Kathy O’Farrell, Claire Heffernan, Beatrice Vaughan and Ella Ryan Meany secured the final victory for Broadford.
