Letter To Editor: Fighting Blindness’ forthcoming Retina 2019 Day

Dear Editor

I would be grateful for the opportunity to let readers of the Clare Herald know about Fighting Blindness’ forthcoming Retina 2019 public engagement day.

We know, according to the most recent statistics available to us, that there are approximately 5,745 people in County Clare who are living with vision impairment or blindness.

Our national conference for people with sight loss, which will welcome people from all over the country, takes place in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Dublin, on Saturday November 16th.

It is a rare opportunity to quiz leading vision experts about eye conditions and for attendees to gain support from others in a similar situation to themselves.

Retina 2019, part of Science Week Ireland, is an international gathering of researchers and clinicians from all over the world. It provides a valuable opportunity to share knowledge on global research efforts and technologies to find treatments and cures for a wide range of conditions causing vision impairment and blindness.

The conference will be opened by Fighting Blindness ambassador and leading international actor, Victoria Smurfit. It will feature sessions on more than 20 rare conditions including retinitis pigmentosa, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and many more.

People interested in attending can register at retina.ie.

Pat joined Clare FM in 1990 where he worked as researcher initially and later presented several different programmes including the station's flagship current affairs programme. He was also the station's News Editor and Deputy Controller of Programmes. Despite leaving in 2003 to pursue a career as a freelance journalist, he continues to work with the station to this day. As well as being the Clare Herald’s Chief Reporter Pat is also freelance journalist and broadcaster, contributing to Ireland’s national newspapers and is a regular contributor to national broadcasters.
