James McInerney of Newmarket-on-Fergus has won the 2016 GAA Poc Fada title.

He finished the course at the Cooley Mountains in fifty shots and had fifty yards to spare over his nearest competitor. James becomes the second Clareman to win the Senior Poc Fada with Sixmilebridge’s Davy Fitzgerald conquering the mountain in 1999 and 2002.

McInerney has ended Brendan Cummins’ hopes of securing a record sixth title in a row. This was the first year the former Clare Senior hurler entered the competition and proved victorious in the County, Munster and All-Ireland Championships.

A spokesperson for Newmarket-on-Fergus GAA told The Clare Herald “We’re delighted with James’ success in the Poc Fada Championships. He has always represented our club with the highest esteem, James is one of the most dedicated adult hurlers in our club and to see him being crowned a national champion is truly fitting for his commitment down through the years”.
