Clare’s senior footballers got their year off to a winning start when they overcame the challenge of Waterford in the McGrath Cup.

It finished 1-10 0-08 in favour of Colm Collins’ men. The encounter took place in a mild and dry Meelick with Clare putting in a strong second half to take the win.

St Josephs Miltown’s Eoin Cleary kicked the only goal of the game on the twentieth minute at a time when Waterford were in front 0-02 0-00. Collins’ men used the first half to dust off the cobwebs as they kicked eleven wides in the opening thirty five minutes, they still led at the break on a scoreline of 1-03 0-04.

They outscored their Waterford counterparts 7-4 in the second half with Cleary kicking three of these points, to setup a semi-final clash with Limerick on Wednesday evening. That tie takes place in the St Patrick’s GAA grounds, Rhebogue at 7:30pm. It also marked the first appearance of Eoghan Collins in a Clare jersey while Kieran Malone and Mikey O’Neill also made their first starts for the county footballers.
