Woman airlifted to hospital after fall in North Clare

A woman has been airlifted to hospital after she was injured in a fall in North Clare this afternoon.

The woman, understood to be in her mid-40s, sustained a lower leg injury in the accident that occurred in sand dunes northeast of Fanore. Emergency services were alerted at around 10.20am.

Members of the Doolin unit of the Coast Guard responded to the incident while National Ambulance Paramedics were also dispatched to the scene.

As the incident was located in difficult terrain in the dune network, the Shannon-based Irish Coast Guard helicopter, Rescue 115, was alsorequested to respond. The helicopter was able to land close to the scene.

The injured woman was assessed and treated at the scene before being stretchered by Doolin Coast Guard volunteers and ambulance paramedics to the waiting helicopter. The casualty was airlifted to University Hospital Galway for treatment.

The incident was coordinated by watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry.
