Jörg Widmann returns to conduct the ICO at UCH Limerick

Irish Chamber Orchestra reconnects with Conductor and Composer Jörg Widmann, championing Schumann the Romantic at University Concert Hall, Limerick on Saturday 5th October.

Two fabulous works by Schumann bookend a re-arrangement of Widmann’s extraordinary Choral Quartet in this once-off performance.

Feel the love and celebration in Schumann’s Overture, Scherzo, and Finale inspired by his marriage. An exhilarating and racy Overture is followed by a lyrical and toe-tapping Scherzo before a speedy finale that set hearts spinning! Revel in the infectious sense of joie de vivre as the composer remarked “The whole has a light, friendly character. I wrote it in a really gay mood.”

From the opening fanfares, experience the joy and exhilaration of Schumann’s infectious Spring Symphony, another blissful burst from the newly married composer. The openness of ICO’s textures brings freshness and clarity to this Romantic work. Experience the spring in Widmann’s step as he steers the romantic character and soul of the music exposing the sheer joy of its dance-like qualities.

In between, Widmann slows down the pace with his evocative Chorale Quartet. This new version sees enhancements added to the work providing new texture and perspective. Delve into the most intimate of sound worlds with the wizardly Widmann.

Widmann was the third most performed composer last year after John Williams and Arvo Pärt.   His works are filled with musical and historical reminiscences mixed with his own inventions. He writes skilfully, constantly playing with styles and has been a huge admirer of Schumann, drawing inspiration from his works.  His long-standing relationship with Irish Chamber Orchestra guarantees a rich synergy and an unforgettable performance as they pour heart, soul, and no small measure of skill into their art.   Don’t miss this once-off performance!

As Ireland’s national chamber orchestra, ICO resides at the University of Limerick and is funded by The Arts Council of Ireland/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
