On-the-spot fines issued at council enforcement checkpoint

A number of on-the-spot fines were issued while follow-up action will also be taken following several detections by Clare County Council’s enforcement team.

The officials mounted two checkpoints in the county on Wednesday on the N85 western relief road near Clareabbey on the outskirts of Ennis and on at Smithstown on the N19 road into Shannon Airport.

The checkpoint was led by An Garda Síochána and involved Clare County Council’s Waste Enforcement Team; the Department of Social Protection; the National Trans-Frontier Shipment Office and the Southern Waste Enforcement Regional Lead Authority (WERLA).

This initiative formed part of the larger ‘Day of Action’, which was co-ordinated by the Southern Multi-Agency Forum, a group that works together to formulate a program for the prevention and detection of environmental crime. Similar checkpoints were held in Cork City and Kerry on the same day.

Clare County Council confirmed: “A total of 62 vehicles were stopped and inspected. Offences detected included failure to produce a copy of a Waste Collection Permit, failure to display Waste Collection Permit numbers on vehicles, and producing out of date Waste Collection Permits.

On the spot fines were issued to vehicle owners and follow up waste enforcement actions will also be taken.”
