M18 reopens after second motorway incident today

The northbound lanes of the M18 motorway were closed for over an hour this evening following a multi-vehicle collision.

The incident occurred at almost the same location where a 9-vehicle accident occurred on September 9th last.

At around 5.00pm today, four cars were involved in a pile-up at Manusmore between junction 11 Dromoland and junction 12 at Killoo, Clarecastle.

Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service responded from Ennis and Shannon station along with National Ambulance Service paramedics and Gardaí.

While both traffic lanes were blocked, firefighters were able to set up an emergency traffic management plan and allowed the backlog of traffic clear via the hard shoulder.

Soon afterwards, the northbound carriageway was completely closed and traffic divert via junction 12 at Dromoland.

Paramedics assessed a number of people at the scene however no one required hospitalisation.

Two of the vehicles involved were able to drive away from the scene while two other cars were recovered by tow truck.

The motorway was reopened at 7.05pm.

Early this morning, emergency services responded to a single vehicle collision on the M18 just north of Crusheen.

It’s understood that a car collided with the median crash barrier. The driver escaped injury.

The incident occurred shortly after 6.00am however the scene was cleared about an hour later.

Traffic Infrastructure Ireland motorway maintenance crews attended both incidents.
