A tourist is recovering in hospital after sustaining injuries in a fall on a walking trail in North Clare this afternoon.

The alarm was raised at around 12.45pm when emergency services were alerted to the incident on the Cliffs of Moher trail about 3 kilometres southwest of Doolin.

The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard responded to the scene followed soon afterwards by National Ambulance Service paramedics.

Coast Guard volunteers soon located the casualty and once ambulance paramedics arrived, they collectively recovered the injured tourist to the waiting ambulance. The man, believed to be visiting from the continent, was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.

A large section of the Cliffs of Moher Trail, also known as the Burren Way, is currently closed after safety concerns were raised following two tragedies last year.

The 6.5 kilometre section where today’s incident occurred is currently open to the public however it ends at Pollboy north of O’Brien’s Tower. While the public have been advised not to proceed any further, many ignore those warnings.

Similarly, south of Brien’s Tower, outside the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience area of responsibility, another 5 kilometre stretch of the trail is closed but hikers continue to ignore warnings.

Emergency services have had to respond to several incidents on closed sections of the trail in recent months.
