A new state-of-the-art laboratory at University of Limerick is set to transform science and engineering education, thanks to a major philanthropic gift from Ei Electronics to the UL Foundation.
The Ei Electronics Science & Engineering Laboratory, located within UL’s School of
Engineering, will enhance hands-on learning and experimentation across multiple
programmes, including Aeronautical, Biomedical, Civil, Mechanical, Design and Manufacturing, Digital Mechatronics, and Electronic & Computer Engineering.
Dr Mick Guinee, Ei Founder and Chairman commented: “We are delighted to support this project. Like UL, Ei Electronics has been embedded in this region for over 40 years. We are committed to fostering and supporting the development of the University and future talent – especially STEM. No better way than supporting an environment such as this that fosters creativity and innovation.”
Professor Ann Ledwith, Interim Provost and Deputy President at UL, said: “This generous donation builds on Ei Electronics’ longstanding relationship with UL, including support for UL’s Cooperative Education Programme and the recruitment of numerous UL graduates into its Shannon-based operations. Professor Kenneth Stanton, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering,
said: “The refurbishment marks a significant milestone in UL’s commitment to delivering
world-class engineering education and fostering teamwork and industry-academic
collaboration. The refurbished laboratory is more than just a physical space—it’s a
catalyst for creativity, experimentation, and excellence.”

Their generosity extends beyond this refurbishment to initiatives such as the Ei Women in Engineering Scholarship and the provision of essential equipment for students.

Representatives from Ei Electronics, UL leadership, faculty, students, and alumni
attended the launch, underscoring the shared commitment to advancing science and
engineering education.
