Clare Civil Defence involved in Galway missing person search

The body of a missing woman has been located and recovered during a search operation in East Galway.

On Friday afternoon, a major search was mounted in the Portumna area for the woman in her 40s, understood to be from Limerick.

Gardaí coordinated the operation which also involved several units of Galway Civil Defence and the teams from Search and Rescue Dog Association (SARDA Ireland).

Clare Civil Defence was also requested to dispatch personnel to assist in the search. Two drone teams and a land search team were dispatched from the team’s Ennis base.

At around 8:30pm on Friday, Clare Civil Defence personnel located and recovered a body and quickly notified Gardaí.

The body was later removed to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, where a post-mortem was due to carried out.

Gardai later confirmed that all circumstances of the discovery are being investigated.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances in relation to the discovery of a body in Woodford, Galway on the night of Friday, 2nd January, 2026.

The body of the woman, aged in her 40s has been removed from the scene to Portiuncula Hospital where a post-mortem will take place in due course. The results of the post-mortem will determine the course of the investigation.”
