Fire crews from two stations have been battling this afternoon to clean up a significant contamination of the N85 road which has been left in a treacherous condition.
It’s understood that several kilometres of the roadway have been affected by an engine fluid or oil spillage.
Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Ennis and Ennistymon stations were alerted and mobilised at around 12.30pm following reports that the main Ennis to Ennistymon road was in a dangerous condition.
On arrival at the scene, fire crews found that the road had been contaminated resulting in very slippy conditions.
Fire crews worked all afternoon to disperse the spillage but efforts have been hampered by damp road conditions.
The road in the vicinity of Kilnamona is understood to have been particularly badly affected.
At least one road traffic collision, involving two cars, has occurred however no injuries have been reported.
At around 5.25pm, a decision was made to close a section of the N85 route.
Motorists are advised to take an alternative or be prepared to face delays.
