A man has been airlifted to hospital after he suffered a fall in the Burren in North Clare this afternoon.
The man in his 70s had been hiking the popular Lough Avalla Trail when the accident occurred. It’s understood that the alarm was raised at around 2.30pm.
The National Ambulance Service was alerted and dispatched resources to the scene. These included an ambulance, understood to have travelled from Galway, and the Athlone-based air ambulance.
Air Corps 112, operated by the National Ambulance Service and Irish Air Corps, was able to land in a nearby field. The helicopter’s paramedic located the casualty promptly. The injured man was treated at the scene and readied for airlifting to hospital.
In the meantime, the Irish Coast Guard was alerted and dispatched the Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter. The Doolin unit of the Coast Guard was also dispatched.
Soon after Rescue 115 arrived on scene, Air Corps 112 was stood down and returned to its base.
Over two hours after the alarm was first raised, the injured man was winched on board the helicopter and airlifted to University Hospital Galway for further treatment.
It’s understood he sustained a head injury.
