The Irish Coast Guard marine rescue coordination centre in Valentia in Kerry was alerted to the incident at around 8.30pm.

A surfer, who was returning to shore, lost his footing on a slippery pathway and suffered a dislocated knee.

The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard used climbing equipment to reach and recover the casualty who was treated for pain and shock while his leg was splinted.

Two climbers descended with a stretcher and the casualty was hauled to the top and handed into the care of the ambulance service.

The injured man was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.
