Ambulance paramedics and gardaí rushed to the scene where they found a man with serious injuries to his upper and lower body including his head, hands and a foot. It’s understood one of the man’s fingers was almost severed.

After assessing the seriousness of the man’s injuries, paramedics decided that he should be airlifted to hospital rather than be transported by road.

The man is understood to have been losing a lot of blood at the time and paramedics were seriously concerned about his condition and sought air support.

The HSE’s National Aeromedical Co-ordination Centre (NACC) requested the Irish Coast Guard to medevac the casualty to hospital.

The Shannon based search and rescue helicopter was already on the landing pad at University Hospital Limerick following an earlier mission when it was requested to assist.

As the helicopter was not immediately available to respond to the scene paramedics opted to travel to Ennis by road and meet it there.

A member of the Irish Coast Guard laid down an orange smoke canister in the Fair Green to mark the landing site and indicate the wind direction for the helicopter crew.

The ambulance arrived under garda escort and the casualty was quickly transferred to the helicopter and flown to Galway University Hospital for emergency surgery.

Gardaí have confirmed that a man was hospitalised with stab injuries following an incident in Miltown Malbay. A spokesman said the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The spokesman also confirmed that a second man was arrested in connection with the incident and was being detained at Kilrush garda station.

During a search of the property a quantity of cannabis was discovered in the attic.

The house was sealed off for a technical examination while gardaí from Ennistymon are investigating the incident.
