Cusack Park played host to eight of the Primary School Hurling and Camogie finals today where Gaelscoil Mhicil Ciosóg and Flagmount/Dromindoora were crowned Division 1 winners in their respective codes with victories over Sixmilebridge and Gaelscoil Mhicil Ciosóg respectively.
The Ennis-based school weren’t the only team chasing double glory on the day, however, as Sixmilebridge, Ogonnelloe and Clooney/Dangan also contested two deciders each.
And it was Ogonnelloe who got the ball rolling for the day with a 4-12 5-06 victory over Newmarket-on-Fergus school Clonmoney in the Division 4 Hurling final.
The second match of the day saw the Ogonnelloe girls attempt to match their male counterparts but they came up against a strong Kilmurry team and were beaten by a score of 4-1 to 1-1.
Boston/Tubber/New Quay were the third team to clinch silverware on the day as they accounted for Ballycar with an impressive tally of 4-17 to Ballycar’s 4-0. With only a goal between the sides at the break, Ballycar will feel that the scoreline doesn’t do their performance justice.
The first of the Division 1 finals began at 1pm and it was Flagmount/Dromindoora who edged a tense affair over Gaelscoil Mhicil Ciosóg by the minimum margin. Having trailed at the break, they rallied to win 1-6 1-5.
That was followed by the Division 2 Camogie where a powerful second half performance from Cratloe saw them home against neighbours Sixmilebridge with a final score of 7-6 0-2.
Sixmilebridge were also unlucky in the following contest where they went down by just two points (0-5 1-4) to Gaelscoil Mhicil Ciosóg in the Division 1 Hurling final.
To finish off the day’s festivities, Clooney/Dangan had their double header of Division 5 finals against Parteen and Doora.
First up for them were the girls who beat Parteen by a score of 1-3 to 0-4 before the boy’s team were beaten 6-6 1-12 by Doora in a high scoring entertaining contest.
The action will continue tomorrow (Wednesday 17th) with Knockanean v Ruan/Toonagh (Division 3 Camogie), Knockanean v Feakle (Division 2 Hurling), Killaloe v Lakyle (Division 6 Camogie) and Kilnamona v St. Aidan’s (Division 3 Hurling).
