Shannon Airport’s winter schedule is set to receive a welcome boost today with Ryanair expected to confirm it will double its winter sun destination programme.

The announcement, due later today, comes just weeks after the airline confirmed plans to axe its Shannon to Paris Beauvais service and reduce frequencies on its Manchester and Memmingen routes.

The airline has cited “aircraft capacity constraints” for those cuts.

Now however, the low cost carrier is set to add two new winter routes from Shannon a move that will double its seasonal sun schedule from the mid-west airport.

Ryanair is expected to confirm that following a 7-year break, it will once again operate a winter service to Malaga beginning in late October. The twice weekly service is expected to operate on Tuesday’s and Saturday’s.

The company is also believed to be ready to announce it will resume services on the Shannon to Fuerteventura route. The airline had previously confirmed the Canary Island destination as year-round service in July 2014 but then withdrew it again for last years winter period.

This year, as a result of todays expected announcement, Shannon’s winter sun programme will double to include LanzaroteTenerife, Fuerteventura and Malaga.

While confirmation of the two new winter routes is expected from both Ryanair and Shannon Airport today, flights to both Malaga and Fuereventura were available for booking on the airline’s website last night.

Last Friday, Shannon Airport welcomed a new airline when Kuwait Airways commenced the first of its three times weekly transit stops.

Kuwait Airways flight KU-117 will stop at the mid-west airport on Friday, Sunday and Wednesday afternoons, before continuing to New York. The almost 13-hour flight has up to now flown directly, without a stop, between Kuwait City and New York.
