A search will continue today for a man feared missing in the Cliffs of Moher area of Co Clare.

The man, understood to be in his late 50’s and from the east of the country, was reported missing by his family on Tuesday afternoon  after they became concerned for his wellbeing.

A car was spotted in the carpark at the Cliffs of Moher on Tuesday night and the alarm was raised when it was still in the same location yesterday. Gardaí were notified and carried out an initial search but found no trace of the man.

Early yesterday Gardaí requested assistance from the Irish Coast Guard with mounting a more thorough search of the area. The Doolin unit of the volunteer service was alerted and requested to commence a search.

Sea conditions at the time were not favourable for launching a rescue boat so the search was carried out by land based teams.

The Shannon based Irish Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter, Rescue 115, also carried out a search of the area as far south as Hags Head.

Searches continued until dusk before being called off for the night. The operation was expected to resume early today.

Meanwhile, soon after returning to their station, Coast Guard volunteers were requested to assist a kayaker in difficulty near Doolin.

Three kayakers were reported to be off Doolin Point and that one was in the water. It’s understood his kayak took on water and capsized.

Doolin Coast Guard launched one rescue boat while the other remained on standby if needed.

One kayaker was taken on board by the rescue team while the others paddled ashore without assistance.
