Naval Service divers and Clare Civil Defence volunteers joined the search yesterday for a Russian man washed into the sea near Doonbeg last Saturday morning.

The man in his 40’s, who had been living in Limerick, was fishing with another man at the notorious Blue Pool when he was struck by a rogue wave.

A major search and rescue operation was mounted that has to date involved Irish Coast Guard units from Kilkee, Doolin and Killaloe as well as the Shannon based search and rescue helicopter, Rescue 115.

Divers from the Garda Water Unit as well as five sub aqua clubs from Clare and Limerick carried out searches of the area on Sunday.

On Tuesday, Naval Divers joined the search operation while volunteers from Clare Civil Defence, deployed small unmanned aircraft (SAU) to search a long stretch of the coastline.

The remotely operated drones can investigate areas along the shoreline and cliff bases without endangering personnel. Crews can view live footage from a mobile control unit.
