SIPTU has expressed shock and disappointment at today’s news that Aer Lingus will axe its cargo operation at Shannon Airport before the end of the year.
Aer Lingus confirmed this morning that its parent company, International Airlines Group (IAG), had completed a review of its operation in Shannon a decision made to close the facility by the end of 2024. It’s understood that around 20 staff are employed at the facility.
SIPTU members working in Aer Lingus (IAG) Cargo in Shannon Airport were left shocked and saddened by a sudden announcement yesterday that the cargo operation is set to close.
SIPTU Industrial Organiser, Andrew Clune said: “Our members were called into a meeting on Wednesday afternoon where management announced the closure to them. They were totally shocked and saddened by this devastating news.”
SIPTU Aviation Sector Organiser, Niall Phillips said: “The union has been in contact with Aer Lingus management and a meeting is scheduled for Thursday, 15th August to discuss the closure and the implications it will have for the 18 SIPTU members employed by Aer Lingus in their Shannon cargo operation.
“At the meeting we will be prioritising redeployment over redundancies. Under the Protection of Employment Act employers proposing a collective redundancy must engage in an information and consultation process with employees’ representatives for at least 30 days prior to issuing any notices of redundancy. SIPTU will be working diligently to ensure that the rights of our members are protected throughout this process.”
