A Samba Band is being established in Ennis by a local Councillor with the help of Samba enthusiast Kevin Corrigan.
“Samba music is distinct for its characteristic rhythmic patterns that originated in Brazil. The rhythm is upbeat and joyful, Samba music also has influences from jazz as well as African music.
We all know the benefits of learning to play music. It has been scientifically proven that playing music helps to combat depression, improves memory, teaches patience and increases mental sharpness.” said Councillor Mary Howard.
Beyond their musical and fun appeal, samba bands provide participants with an immersive musical experience that engages them mentally and physically. By actively participating in playing instruments and creating rhythmic patterns, participants develop essential musical skills such as coordination, timing, and listening. Being part of a band also encourages teamwork and collaboration, allowing participants to develop their abilities to play in sync with others. In addition, as Samba music requires everyone to work together, it is an ideal vehicle to develop team work and enable participation from all demographics in the community.
Kevin Corrigan has been a member of the Batafada Samba Band since 2006 and has taught Samba Drumming for many years. As part of the Batafada Samba Band, Kevin has had the opportunity to perform both nationally and internationally, including Disneyland in Florida and the Edinburgh fringe festival. Kevin encourages everyone to give it a try, even if you think you are not musical, samba is for everyone, including you!
Anyone, adult or child, that is interested in availing of a free samba drumming taster session is invited to join us on Monday February 26th at 7.30pm. Cllr Howard has guaranteed “lots of fun and the opportunity to meet new people both young and not so young”.
