Clare FM documentary celebrates the late Edna O’Brien

Clare FM will broadcast a new two two-part radio documentary this Monday and Tuesday celebrating one of the world’s most celebrated and influential writers.

Edna O’Brien, born in Tuamgraney, Co. Clare in 1930, was renowned for her lyrical prose and fearless exploration of themes such as love, identity, and the role of women in society, she carved out a career that earned her international acclaim and a lasting place in the canon of modern literature.

‘Wordsmith’, a brand-new two-part radio documentary produced by Clare FM’s Programme Director & Head of Operations, Padraic Flaherty, reflects on her remarkable life and legacy. Told through the voices of her family, friends, and colleagues, the series retraces her roots in Clare, her journey across the sea, and the extraordinary impact of her words on readers everywhere.

O’Brien’s debut trilogy, The Country Girls, The Lonely Girl, and Girls in Their Married Bliss, was banned in Ireland, yet it captured the imagination of a generation and established her as a central figure in the nation’s literary transformation. Throughout her career she remained both celebrated and controversial, confronting difficult subjects with courage and authenticity, and earning countless accolades along the way.

Following her passing in July 2024 at the age of 93, ‘Wordsmith’ brings together tributes from President Michael D. Higgins, actor Gabriel Byrne, author Andrew O’Hagan, and many more. For the first time, her sons share intimate memories of her family life, her writing, and the enduring legacy she leaves behind.

This production offers not only a literary portrait, but also a deeply human story of resilience, creativity, and courage. It captures the essence of a woman who refused to be silenced and whose voice continues to inspire. With rare archival recordings and newly captured reflections, the programme paints a vivid picture of Edna’s world. Her story is as much about modern Ireland as it is about her own remarkable journey. Above all, ‘Wordsmith’ honours a Clare woman whose words changed hearts and minds across the globe.

‘Wordsmith’ broadcasts this Monday and Tuesday at 11am, only on Clare FM.
