The acclaimed Hollywood director found dead in his home in Los Angeles at the weekend used the spectacular Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare in one of his films.
The bodies of Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle were discovered in what’s now believed to be a double murder.
Reiner is best known for movies like A Few Good Men, When Harry Met Sally, The Wolf Of Wall Street, Stand By Me as well as numerous TV series.
Another of Rob Reiner’s films utilised the Cliffs of Moher for the 1987 film The Princess Bride which he co-produced and directed. It was shot almost entirely in England except for the scenes at the Cliffs of Insanity which were filmed at the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare.
In the movie, the cliffs were depicted as the Cliffs of Insanity which were scaled by the Fezzik (the giant) who carried Vizzini, Inigo and Buttercup to the top.
Reiner shot the scenes in Clare but used a set for the top of the cliffs where Inigo Montoya and Dread Pirate Roberts have their infamous duel. The cliff scenes are a mix of matte paintings and the actual Cliffs of Moher.
The film was a mild box office success managing to almost double its 16 million dollar budget, and has since grown into a cult classic.
