This April, Music Network will present the remarkable virtuoso guitarist Plínio Fernandes at glór in Ennis.
Born and raised in São Paulo, Fernandes fuses the tradition of classical guitar with Brazilian folk music.
An artist whose performances are full of heart and wide-ranging expression, his versatility is evident from his sensitive delivery of works by Bach to his exuberant playing of the vibrant music of Brazil.
Since 2021, at the age of just twenty-seven, Fernandes has been an exclusive Decca Gold recording artist. He released his debut album Saudade in 2022, which hit number one on the Billboard Traditional Classical Albums Chart. His second album in the recording partnership, Bacheando, explores Bach’s influence on Brazilian music and was released in September 2023.
The 2023/2024 season saw Plínio embark on a five-date duo recital tour of the UK with cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, which included a sold out performance at London’s Wigmore Hall. In addition to regular collaborations with Sheku, Plínio frequently performs with pianist Lang Lang, including at his 2022 Royal Albert Hall concert which features on the Disney + channel. Having performed in sold out concert halls around the world, including renowned venues such as Radio City Music Hall in New York, Plínio has also given solo recitals and masterclasses in various locations, including Hong Kong, Portugal (for the MIMO festival in Porto) and throughout South America. August 2024 saw Fernandes make his BBC Proms debut and also appear for the first time at the prestigious Lucerne Festival.
Plínio has also received many press accolades with Gramophone saying ‘His tone is gloriously rich’, Acoustic Guitar commenting ‘Fernandes plays brilliantly with warmth, precision, and a burnished tone’, and BBC Music Magazine calling his playing ‘beguiling’.
Plínio was named on Forbes Brazil’s ‘Under 30’ list, was selected as a Rising Star by Classic FM, and recently received the Revelação Award at the 30th Annual Prêmio da Música Brasileira. A passionate advocate for music education, Plínio was invited to join London Music Masters as an ambassador and is involved with performing, teaching and guiding young musicians in schools.
Undoubtedly a rising star on the international scene, his polished sound, virtuosic technique, and innovation make him a must see for classical and Latin music fans alike. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear such extraordinary talent. On tour from 5-13 April, he will perform at venues in Kildare, Dublin, Galway, Clare, Wexford and Waterford.
