Tributes paid to Clare music legend Frank Custy

Funeral arrangements for the late Frank Custy, Toonagh, Dysart

Tributes are being paid for one of Clare’s most inspirational musicians and music teachers, Frank Custy.

Frank Custy died peacefully on February 29th at the Galway Clinic, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Dysart, as a teacher and principal Frank inspired many people to take up music, and Toonagh National School became renowned for its promotion of traditional Irish music under his leadership.

In 2016, glór was honoured to present Frank Custy with the annual MÓRglór Award in celebration of his significant contribution to traditional music in Clare. The award was presented to Frank at a special concert which brought together his family and the many friends and musicians who learnt their craft from him over the years.

In their tribute, glór said: “We look back on that night with great fondness and extend our sincere condolences to Frank’s family and friends on his passing. “

Toonagh Hall and Sports Complex posted on their social media: “Following the sad passing of Frank Custy the Committee of Dysart Muintir Na Tire wish to express sincere sympathy to his wife Teresa, his children Nóra, Mary, Frances, Cathy and Tola, his brother Sean, his sister Carmel and all their extended families.

Frank was a legend is his own lifetime, who lived a quiet and unassuming life in Toonagh. He was a kind and generous friend and neighbour to all.

Frank made an outstanding contribution to the Parish of Dysart/Ruan throughout his long life. He was a valued member of our Community, not only as a Teacher, but through his involvement with every project carried out in the area. He worked tirelessly on behalf of Muintir Na Tire and provided music for every occasion. He was a renowned music teacher who inspired and taught hundreds to take up traditional Irish music. Many continued on to become household names both nationally and internationally

Frank remained active in the community right up till his death, with weekly music sessions in the hall and daily walks, when he was always up for a chat.

Kilfenora Music Festival said on their Facebook page: ” Another great gentleman of Clare has left us. Frank Custy was the bedrock and inspiration of the revival of traditional music in Clare, aided and abetted by his brilliant musical off-spring. His achievements are legend, and will remain so.”

Clare GAA said: “Clare GAA county board offer our deepest sympathy to the Custy family, Ruan on the passing of Frank Custy. Frank played hurling with his native Ruan and was very heavily with Comhaltas Ceoltóiri Eireann as a musician and music teacher. “

Frank will be sadly missed by his beloved wife Teresa, sister Carmel Linnane and brother Sean Custy, children, grandchildren, in laws, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.
