A transatlantic jet has made an unscheduled landing at Shannon Airport this evening after the crew declared a medical emergency.

Air Canada flight AC-859 diverted to mid-west airport after turning around over the Atlantic.

The flight was about 90 minutes into its journey from London to Toronto when the crew opted to divert.

The crew reported they had a man in his 50’s on board who had fallen ill.

Airport authorities implemented procedures to deal with a medical emergency which included alerting the National Ambulance Service.

The Boeing 787-800 Dreamliner landed shortly after 9.10pm and taxied straight to the terminal where paramedics and a doctor were standing by.

The patient was assessed and treated on board before being transported to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.

The flight is expected to continue its journey later tonight.
