A number of flights have diverted to Shannon Airport because of high winds in Dublin where the airport is still facing delays.
Five aircraft have already diverted to Shannon because of what have been described as “strong and persistent crosswinds exceeding safe operating limits for certain aircraft types.”
Winds of up to 33 knots (61kmh) have been reported in Dublin.
Dozens of flights were placed in holding patterns including transatlantic services while several others were forced to divert to Shannon and even Manchester in England.
Similar windy conditions have been reported at Ireland West Airport in Knock but flights there have not been affected.
The flights which have diverted to Shannon are: KLM 1139 from Amsterdam; Ryanair 3976 from Barcelona and Aer Lingus services from Milan (EI-433); Vienna (EI-661) and Barcelona (EI-563).
While windy conditions continue at Dublin the backlog of inbound aircraft is slowly clearing. The Dublin Airport website is showing that the majority of flights are ‘delayed’.
The first of the flights diverted to Shannon, (KLM-1139) continued to Dublin shortly before 3.00pm with the others expected to follow later.
