Jet diverts to Shannon with ill passenger

A transatlantic jet has diverted to Shannon Airport this afternoon after an elderly passenger fell ill suddenly.

Norwegian Air Shuttle flight DY-7125 was en route from Copenhagen to Puerto Rico at the time.

The Boeing 787-800 Dreamliner jet was an hour west of Shannon Airport when the crew declared a medical emergency at around 12.30pm.

The crew advised controllers that they wished divert to Shannon reporting they had an elderly man on board who required urgent medical assistance.

An ambulance and rapid response advanced paramedic unit were sent to the airport from Ennis.

The flight landed safely at 1.25pm and was met by airport fire and rescue crews.

Paramedics assessed and stabilised the patient before he was transported to University Hospital Limerick for further treatment.

The jet continued its journey at 3.20pm.
