The man 62-year-old is understood to have been travelling under medical supervision along with family members when he fell ill.

He was travelling on board Kuwait Airways flight KU-117 from Kuwait City to New York which makes a scheduled daily technical stop at Shannon Airport. The flight did not divert to Shannon.

The Boeing 777-300(ER) jet landed at 1.57am and was met at the terminal building by airport authorities and National Ambulance Service paramedics.

The man was rushed to University Hospital Limerick (UHL) but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Gardaí have confirmed that a postmortem examination will be carried out on Monday.

The flight continued its journey shortly before 6.00pm following a two hour delay.

Shannon Airport dealt with five unscheduled landings over the Christmas period including four medical emergencies. A 10-year-old girl passed away on a flight from Toronto to London on Christmas Eve.
