A County Clare global aviation entrepreneur will be honoured by NUI Galway at a special ceremony next month.
This year the Alumni Award for Business and Commerce, sponsored by Bank of Ireland, will be presented to aviation entrepreneur Dómhnal Slattery.
Mr Slattery founded Avolon in 2010, and the company made over €1bn in profits in 2018. Its investment deal with Japanese giant Orix in November of 2018 represents the largest ever transaction between an Irish and Japanese company, involving a total of $2.2bn.
Avolon, based in Dublin, is the third largest aircraft lessor in the world, As of 31 December 2018, Avolon had an owned, managed and committed fleet of 971 aircraft. Avolon has received many industry awards since formation in 2010, most recently the Finance Dublin 2018 M&A Deal of the Year Award and the Company of the Year and Aviation Leasing Achievement of the Year Award at the 2016 Aviation Industry Awards.
The NUI Galway Alumni Awards recognise individual excellence and achievements among the University’s more than 100,000 graduates worldwide. Now in its twentieth year, the Awards programme boasts an impressive roll call of more than 100 outstanding NUI Galway alumni who have gone on to make an impact in their chosen field, and in so doing honour their alma mater.
Among the distinguished honorees are President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, broadcasters, Seán O’Rourke and Gráinne Seoige, business leaders, Tara McCarthy (Bord Bia), Adrian Jones (Goldman Sachs) and Aedhmar Hynes (Text 100), figures from public life such as Pat Rabbitte, Eamon Gilmore (Tánaiste) and Máire Whelan (Attorney General), and sports figures such as rugby international, Ciarán FitzGerald and Olive Loughnane (Olympic medallist).
This year’s awardees highlight the global impact of NUI Galway and its alumni as the University celebrates 20 years of these annual awards.

Dómhnal Slattery, Chief Executive Officer, Avolon
Dómhnal Slattery is the Chief Executive Officer with 30 years’ experience in the aircraft leasing industry. As CEO, Dómhnal sets the company strategy and commercial objectives and oversees their execution. Dómhnal has built Avolon to be a global leader in aircraft leasing through a period of private equity ownership, a successful listing on the NYSE; and, a take private with Bohai Leasing.
In 1989, Dómhnal began his aviation financing career, initially in marketing roles with Guinness Peat Aviation (GPA) and GECAS. In 1994, he established his own aircraft advisory and investment banking services company, International Aviation Management Group (IAMG).
In 2001 The Royal Bank of Scotland Group acquired IAMG as the launch platform of RBS Aviation Capital. Dómhnal was Chief Executive of this business from 2001 to 2004 and went on to become Managing Director of the Structured Asset Finance business for the Royal Bank of Scotland Group. He continued as a non-executive Director of RBS Aviation Capital until January 2008.
Dómhnal has a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) from University College Galway and is a graduate of the Accelerated Development Programme from the London Business School.
