A transatlantic flight diverted to Shannon Airport early this morning, the second unscheduled landing by aircraft of the same airline in just 8 hours.
American Airlines flight 290 was en route from New York’s JFK airport to Dublin when a passenger fell ill and the crew decided to divert to the mid-west airport.
The Boeing 757-200 jet landed shortly after 6.00am and was met at the terminal by ambulance paramedics. The passenger was removed to hospital for treatment.
The flight is due to continue to Dublin shortly.
Last night, American Airlines flight 141 diverted to Shannon after the crew reported a technical issue over the Atlantic.
The Boeing 777-200 jet was travelling from London’s Heathrow Airport to JFK International Airport in New York with 100 passengers and crew.
At around 9.40pm the crew made the decision to turn around and divert reporting they had an issue with a “battery discharging” and had been advised by their operations centre not to continue across the Atlantic.
The flight landed safely at 10.10pm and taxied to the terminal where engineers were waiting to investigate the matter.
The flight was later cancelled and passengers taken to local hotels for the night.
The flight is expected to continue its journey to New York later today while some passengers are being accommodated on another service from Shannon.
Update: 10.55am
Flight AA-290 continued its journey to Dublin at 10.50am.
