Aer Lingus’ transatlantic operations at Shannon Airport could be negatively impacted when transatlantic flights commence for the first time from Cork next year.

According to the Irish Examiner, Aer Lingus’ chief operating officer Mike Rutter made the comment during a visit to Cork Airport yesterday.

Norwegian Air International was recently granted approval to operate between Ireland and the United States with the carrier planning to fly routes from Cork.

While much of media coverage centred on Cork Airports plans from transatlantic services, Shannon Airport had been in talks with Norwegian since 2014 and has also struck a deal with the Irish-registered airline, owned by the Norwegian Air Group.

Mr Rutter is quoted as saying he didn’t think the proposed new Norwegian Air International flights from Cork would have an impact on Dublin. He’s reported to have said however that Shannon’s position as a carrier for Aer Lingus could be affected.

“It may have an effect upon Shannon, where historically Aer Lingus has been committed to serving Boston and New York. We obviously will do our best to make sure that effect is as minimal as possible,” Mr Rutter said.
