A British Airways flight was forced to divert to Shannon Airport early today because of weather issues in southern England.

The Airbus A380-800 Superjumbo was only minutes from landing at London’s Heathrow airport when it was placed in a holding pattern south of the city.

British Airways flight BA-56 from Johannesburg was one of dozens of services affected by Storm Katie which has been battering the UK.

After circling for a time, the crew opted to divert to Shannon where it touched down at 7.30am. The flight continued it’s journey at 9.20am after being refuelled and cleared to return to London.

It’s the second time this month that a British Airways A380 double-decker diverted to the mid west airport because of weather issues in the UK.

There were almost 320 unscheduled landings at Shannon Airport last year the majority as a result of weather, airport closures or flight crews being “out of hours.”
