Update:
Friday – 1.45pm – Passengers continued their flight this afternoon at 1.22pm on the replacement aircraft operating as flight AA-9243.
The incident aircraft remains grounded in Shannon for repairs.

Thursday – 5.10pm – Passengers have been sent to hotels for the night and are expected to continue their journey on Friday morning.
The airline confirmed: “American Airlines flight AA63 from Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) to Miami (MIA) diverted to Shannon (SNN), Ireland, due to a mechanical issue. The flight landed safely at Shannon and we will be providing hotel accommodation for our customers, as the flight will re-depart tomorrow morning. We apologize to our customers for the disruption to their journey and our Customer Relations team will be reaching out to provide additional assistance.”
Thursday – 11.30pm – A replacement aircraft, flight AA-9644, has departed New York and is due in Shannon at around 3.20am. The passengers are expected to continue their journey to Miami on flight AA-63P at midday on Friday.
Earlier: A transatlantic jet has made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport after developing a mechanical fault over the Atlantic.
The crew of American Airlines flight AA-63 declared a Mayday at around 1.15pm this afternoon after reporting an issue with one of the jet’s engines.
The Boeing 777-200 jet, with 219 passengers and crew on board, was over an hour northwest of Shannon and about three hours into its flight from Paris to Miami in Florida at the time.
Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Shannon Town and Ennis were sent to Shannon to provide support the airport’s own fire and rescue service.
A number of National Ambulance Service resources and Garda units were also dispatched to the airport while the Irish Coast Guard was alerted.
RNLI lifeboats based at Kilrush, Aran Islands and Fenit were placed on standby for the emergency along with Shannon Estuary Mud Search and Rescue.
The flight landed safely at 2.27pm.
The airline has confirmed that the flight suffered a ‘mechanical’ issue.
A spokeswoman said: “Our maintenance team will evaluate the aircraft, we hope to get our customers on their way to Miami as soon as possible.”
