The body of a man was recovered from the River Shannon in Limerick this evening following a 31-day search that involved Bunratty Search and Rescue.
The body is believed to be that of a man seen entering the Abbey River in Limerick on February 5th last.
The initial search involved Limerick City Fire Service, Limerick Marine Search and Rescue Service and the Shannon based Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 115. The search continued for several hours with no sign of the man.
Members of the volunteer search and rescue team from Bunratty carried out searches for a total of 28 days, missing just 3 days last week due to weather events.
On some days, the team launched two boats to search the River Shannon and Estuary from Bunratty into Limerick including a number of islands in the area. The team also deployed its drone to help cover a wider area.
This afternoon, a passer-by reported seeing a body in the water near Arthur’s Quay Park in the city.
Watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue sub centre in Valentia in Kerry mounted a recovery operation after being alerted.
Members of Limerick Marine Search and Rescue Service were alerted at around 4.30pm and made their way to the scene.
The body was removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out.
The search operation has now been stood down.
