The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) is appealing to the people of Clare to help build the national blood supply in advance of the June Bank Holiday weekend.
One blood type has now fallen to just 2.1 days of available stock — at a time when demand from hospitals remains consistently high.
To help replenish supplies, the IBTS is asking donors — both new and returning — to attend upcoming blood donation clinics in Clare.
“Every donation makes a difference,” said an IBTS spokesperson. “Currently, 65% of all blood donated supports cancer patients, and 5% is used for childbirth-related care. By giving blood, you are directly helping patients in hospitals across Ireland.”
This year, severe weather conditions and an increase in respiratory illnesses have further impacted blood collections, creating an even greater need for public support.
The IBTS is also particularly encouraging new and younger donors, as well as individuals from diverse backgrounds to step forward and donate.
“Whether it’s your first time donating or your first time in a while, we need you now. The more people who donate, the stronger and more resilient Ireland’s blood supply becomes.”
