The cliffs and visitor centre reopened Saturday however staff remained on alert as Met Éireann raised their Yellow alert to status Orange.

Early this morning however, wind measuring equipment (anemometer) at the cliffs recorded gusts over 155kmh at 8.30am.

Since then, wind speeds of 177 kmh (110mph) have been reported at the site which will remain closed for the rest of the day.

Storm Clodagh is due to pass eastwards to the north of Ireland later today.

A spokeswoman for the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre said: “Conditions are extremely dangerous today so we will be remaining closed. We would advise people not visit the cliffs today under any circumstances.”

Over 1 million people visited the iconic cliffs in 2014 making it the country’s second most popular attraction after the Guinness Storehouse.

High winds have previously lifted people and even vehicles off the ground resulting in some injuries.

Intending visitors have been advised to check with Cliffs visitor centre or social media before travelling.

Meanwhile, the annual Christmas Market at Trump International Resort in Doonbeg was postponed this morning.

A further update is expected at 1.00pm.
