Leonard Cleary, Acting Director of Service, Housing, explained, “Clare County Council has responsibility for the provision and maintenance of appropriate social housing within its functional area. Each year Clare County Council is involved in the lease, purchase, construction and financing of social housing and is seeking to increase the number of accommodation units being brought into use by various means available under the Social Housing Strategy 2020.”

“It is intended that part of the housing need in County Clare will be addressed by purchasing accommodation units, including houses, directly from property owners and by purchasing land for the building of social housing,” he said.

Mr. Cleary explained that consideration will be given to plots of appropriately zoned development lands on either Greenfield or Brownfield sites, as well as lands that incorporate unfinished residential development and derelict sites.

He continued, “Clare County Council is seeking to create sustainable communities by encouraging a greater mix of social and private housing under the Government Department guidelines of Quality Housing for Sustainable Communities through purchasing houses and land in areas that do not currently have adequate numbers social housing units or where there is future increased demands anticipated. “

“In addition, it is expected that in the coming weeks the Council will be renewing the existing advertisement seeking lease of houses and apartments as either single stock units or portfolios of stock,” Mr. Cleary concluded.

The closing date for receipt of tenders for completed housing schemes, land banks and development sites is Friday, 5th August 2016. These will be assessed against a published set of criteria.
