The gang was intercepted after Gardaí were alerted to suspicious activity in Newmarket on Fergus at around 6.00am.

Gardaí arrived at the scene and managed to detain one man while four others fled in a car believed to have been stolen in Limerick earlier.

The vehicle was pursued by gardaí north towards Ennis before the vehicle turned around and sped off towards Limerick City almost 50 kilometres away.

The chase continued for a time before the vehicle was stopped by Gardaí and the occupants arrested.

It’s understood that properties in Sixmilebridge and Newmarket on Fergus were targeted by the gang.

The five are being questioned at Ennis and Shannon Garda stations.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.
