Four men arrested following robbery in West Clare

GardaĆ­ are still questioning four men, arrested yesterday, following a robbery at a post office in West Clare.

The incident occurred in Carrigaholt on the Loop Head Peninsula at around 3.15pm. Several men are reported to have entered the premises with at least one implemennt. A woman in her 40s received treatment for non-life threatening injuries while a quantity of cash was reported as stolen.

GardaĆ­ later intercepted a car on the R474 near Beechpark between Inch of Ennis. The car was stopped by armed detectives and members of the Garda Armed Support Unit.

Four men, aged in their 30s, were arrested and conveyed to Garda Stations in Co. Clare.

Photos circulated on social media platforms showed at least two of the suspects lying on the ground close to a vehicle and surrounded by armed GardaĆ­.

All four suspects are currently being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

The road was closed for a time while GardaĆ­ dealt with the incident. The suspect vehicle was later recovered from the scene and will be technically examined.

Meanwhile, a car reported to be on fire at the entrance to a windfarm at Letteragh near Kilmaley, is suspected of being involved in the robbery. Clare County Fire and Rescue Service crews from Ennis responded to the incident.

GardaĆ­ also attended that scene and the vehicle, which was destroyed, was recovered and taken away for forensic examination.

GardaĆ­ are appealing for witnesses to this incident to contact them.

A spokesperson said: ā€œAnyone who was in The Square, Carrigaholt, Co. Clare area on Wednesday 21st January 2026 between 3 pm and 3:30 pm and who may have any information is asked to contact investigating GardaĆ­. Any road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make that footage available.
