Gardaí probing Clarecastle incident seek driver of car

Gardaí investigating a serious incident at a supermarket in Clarecastle in April say they wish to speak to the driver of a car which was observed in the Ballyea/Newhall area following the incident.

On Sunday April 14th last, a man in his 20s sustained what Gardaí described as ‘serious injuries’ after he was allegedly assault by two other men in a shop in Clarecastle.

A second male, in his late teens, was also assaulted and sustained less serious injuries while an elderly woman, understood to have been a customer in the shop, was also hurt. It’s understood that she was knocked over during the melee and was treated in hospital.

Gardai are continuing their investigation into this serious incident which occurred at Deacy’s Centra, opposite the church in the village.

A Garda spokesperson said: “This incident occurred after mass and the investigation team are anxious to speak to the owner or the driver of a White Opel / Vauxhall Insigna that was in the Ballyea/Newhall area between 12:45pm – 1:15pm.

If you are the owner or driver of this vehicle or you believe you know who is the owner or driver, please contact Ennis Garda Station as they would like to eliminate this vehicle from their enquiries.”

A car was found on fire near Ballyea about 4 kilometres from the scene in Clarecastle soon after the incident.
