A Gardaí investigation is ongoing into Monday morning’s robbery at the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre.
€20,000 is reported to have been stolen from the second biggest tourist attraction in the country. Thieves cut power from the centre on Monday morning in what was a sophisticated and planned burglary. Specialist equipment was used by the group of individuals to cut the power which members of local ESB crews restored after a number of hours.
Opened since 2007, this is the first time there has been a security breach at the Visitors Centre. Gardaí are reviewing CCTV footage while staff at the premises are being interviewed.
Clare County Council stated “Existing security arrangements are being reviewed in light of this incident and any further measures considered necessary will be implemented by the Local Authority”.
Fianna Fáil Cllr Michael Hillery is concerned to see the attraction Mictargeted in such a light. “It reached its millionth visitor last August and it just shows you the amount of people that are visiting the Cliffs of Moher, it’s very concerning that they would target something like that. It looks like a professional job, the current was cut off, there was a lot of security in place at the Cliffs of Moher but they were able to bypass that and get in so that’s the concern I would have”.
