The hunt is continuing for second man (22) who escaped from Ennis courthouse at the same time. A third prisoner was tackled to the ground and was prevented from escaping.

Its understood the men were among a group of 12 prisoners who had been held in cells at the courthouse where they had, or were due to, appear before the district court today.

Its believed that prison service staff had delivered food to the prisoners in their cells but the door had not been bolted correctly. One man is thought to have reached out through a hatch and open the door of his cell.

Three men attempted to run to freedom at around 3.15pm however one was stopped by prison officers. The two other men ran through a door at the rear of the courthouse and out a gate.

The hunt is continuing for the second man who is from Limerick City.
