Crowe welcomes works at ‘dangerous crossroads’

Brennan’s Cross, Meelick

New road-safety measures have been installed at Brennan’s Cross, Meelick.

Cllr Cathal Crowe says the provision of safety measures at the “dangerous crossroads” is something he has campaigned for over several years. Clare County Council employees have installed luminous posts and high-visibility signage on the approaches to the junction.

“These measures should help to better define the junction and make it safer for motorists. New line markings will also be painted in the new year and the application of anti-skid surfacing in the months ahead will give added traction and encourage people to drive slower” the Fianna Fáil Cllr stated.

Meelick has shown steady population increases in recent censuses and the local roads’ network is heavily used as a ‘rat run’ by commuters travelling to and from their places of work in Limerick and Shannon.

Crowe added “All of this has lead to a heavy usage of Meelick’s road network. With heavy usage comes danger! Many locals have conveyed to me their fears of driving between Brennan’s Cross and Meelick National School on weekday mornings, such is the volume of vehicles driving at a fast speed and squeezing past each other on the narrow roads”.

He concluded “The works being undertaken at Brennan’s Cross are being funded vis-a-vis ‘Low Cost Safety Scheme’ funding from the Dept. of Transport. The installation of new signage and luminous posts will hopefully help to draw the attention of motorists to the junction points and the completion of further works in the New Year should go a long way towards improving safety”.
