Gaelcholáiste an Chláir Welcomes the Class of 2031

Gaelcholáiste an Chláir has proudly welcomed its new first-year students this week – the Graduation Class of 2031 – continuing its tradition of excellence as Clare’s only Gaelcholáiste.

The school enters the new academic year on the back of remarkable success in the 2025 Leaving Certificate, where an outstanding 85% of students achieved over 400 points, reflecting the school’s strong academic track record and the dedication of both students and staff.

Principal James O’Shaughnessy paid tribute to the achievements of the Gaelcholáiste students: “We are incredibly proud of our Leaving Certificate class of 2025. Their results are a testament to their hard work, the commitment of our teachers, and the unique advantages of an education through the medium of Irish.”

At Gaelcholáiste an Chláir, students benefit from an ‘unrivalled curriculum’, with the full Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate available entirely through Irish. Subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Technology, History, Geography, Home Economics, Music, Art, and Business Studies are all taught through the Irish language, providing a truly immersive educational experience.

The advantages of studying through Irish are clear: small class sizes ensure individual attention, teaching standards are consistently excellent, and students enjoy first-rate academic and sporting facilities. The school offers a natural pathway for Gaelscoil graduates to continue their education through Irish, while also welcoming students from

English-medium primary schools who wish to embrace a bilingual education at second level.

Mr O’Shaughnessy added: “Studying through Irish gives our students a unique advantage – not only in academic achievement, but also in developing bilingual fluency, cultural identity, and access to opportunities both in Ireland and internationally.”

The school will host its Open Night on Tuesday, 14th October 2025, at 7pm in the main school building, and all are warmly invited to attend.

Gaelcholáiste an Chláir continues to go from strength to strength, combining a strong academic tradition with a vibrant cultural and sporting life – ensuring students receive a holistic, future-focused education through Ireland’s native language.
