Smithstown Light Engineering has confirmed its sponsorship of a team of six talented transition year students from Coláiste Mhuire, Ennis, as they rev up for the national finals of the F1 in Schools Ireland competition.
To kick-start the collaboration, Coláiste Mhuire’s ‘Smooth Operators’ visited Smithstown Light Engineering’s head office in Shannon to gain engineering insights.
The Formula 1 ‘F1 in Schools’ project, aimed at secondary school STEM students, challenges participants to design, race, and construct their miniature Formula 1 car.
The team includes: Sofie Keane (team manager), Niamh Queally (business/ marketing manager), Lauren MacCarthy (business/ marketing manager), Amy Ryan (engineer), Amy Hennessy (Design Engineer) and Amalie Carolan (Design Engineer).
Celebrating its 50th year in business, Smithstown Light Engineering has established itself as a leader in manufacturing precision components for the top medical device and orthopaedic companies globally. However, the company is no stranger to Formula 1 having supplied components to several car manufacturers in the past. As a result, the company is delighted to throw its support behind the all-female team.
Gerard Henn, CEO, Smithstown Light Engineering, said “We are excited to be part of Coláiste Mhuire’s journey in the F1 in Schools competition. As we commemorate our 50 years in business, we are particularly delighted to support STEM initiatives that encourage students to explore and excel in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We look forward to supporting the team on their journey to the finals.”
