The alarm was raised at around 1.00am when emergency services received a call reporting a 18-year-old having entered the water.

Three units from the fire brigade from Limerick City raced to the scene while the service’s FireSwift rescue boat was also launched.

Search teams and divers from Limerick Marine Search and Rescue Service were also requested to assist in the search and rescue operation.

Divers searched the river in the area behind Henry St garda station and located a body a short time late.

The Shannon based Irish Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter was on it’s way to the scene but was stood down once it was confirmed that the body had been recovered.

The remains were removed to University Hospital Limerick for a postmortem examination.

The young man is believed to be from west Limerick.
